The challenge
Mid-Ohio Foodbank is working to end hunger across central Ohio, and a big part of that work is helping people understand the problem. Donors, volunteers, and the public all needed to see the same brand and hear the same message, whether they were reading an annual report, volunteering on-site, or driving past a billboard downtown.
What I did
As the foodbank's only in-house designer, I took a handful of agency assets and grew them into a bolder, more consistent look. Here's some of what that looked like.
Out in the community
Outdoor pieces that had a few seconds to land: a static billboard in the Arena District, an animated digital billboard at High and Broad, and bus stop posters for the This is Hunger campaign.
In donors’ hands
Print pieces that showed donors the progress their support was making. The This is Hunger brochure walks through the ways the foodbank fights hunger and went on to win a Columbus ADDY Award. The 2017 Annual Report was designed in tandem with a larger rebrand that was still taking shape. For both, I designed the layout, chose the photography, and edited the copy with our copywriter.
Getting people involved
Pieces that invited people in. The Spring Match postcard asked donors to give during a fundraising event; I wrote the copy and, other than the photo, hand-lettered and illustrated everything on it. The volunteer hallway timeline tells the foodbank's history to every volunteer who comes in for a shift; I was the lead designer and one of the copywriters.
The result
One story told three ways: out in the community, in donors' hands, and in the pieces that got people involved. Same look and same message wherever someone met the foodbank, with a Columbus ADDY Award along the way.
